While it feels like we’re in a long, slow and sometimes never-ending process of evolution and ascension, we are making a lot more progress than we realize. Because we are in the process, we are less aware of our results than if we were casual observers, rather than active participants. If it appears that we’re going in circles, we are. But the circles are getting smaller and the doorways out of the circle are more frequent if we learn one thing, the way out of the circles or cycles is to shift our energy and we move on by moving up.

Upward movement happens when we shift our beliefs to create a new mindset or, more appropriately, we become more mindless and more soulful. Choices taken from our mindset (think about that word for a minute) are based on old beliefs, thoughts, and energy. The choices we make from a point of mindlessness, meaning using less of our mind or loosening up some of our rigid beliefs, and from our soul’s unlimited perspective, are new and different. This also means they are uncomfortable, unknown, untested, and unfamiliar. But that’s the only way that we can ‘move on’, by raising our vibrations.

Think of it as shifting our energetic gears — if you want to go faster, you have to get into a higher gear. Trying to go faster in the same gear will only put more stress on the engine and you won’t go faster, you will just feel like you’re moving faster in the same circle or cycle. What does it take to move up? Try looking at a situation from the point of a new potential. If you could have any outcome you wanted, what would it be? That’s why I stress looking at situations from the outcome because it is by expanding the potential outcome that creates a shift in our energy, and that moves us out of our cycles and circles, and into new pathways.

What is your mindset? Think of a problem or challenge you are having right now and think of all of the ways that you will fail, it won’t work, the limitations or things you cannot do. Keep on thinking of them until you cannot think of any more. Be bold here, get all of the limitations out in front of you. Now, what just happened to your energy? Are you feeling bad, sad, hopeless, helpless, and powerless? That’s the power of your mindset when you use it to limit your options and growth.

Now think of one or two powerful, optimal outcomes for this situation (or more, depending on how creative you want to be). Don’t worry about whether you think the outcomes are possible, just create one or two powerful outcomes. Do you notice a shift in your energy, a new focus for your thoughts, a lightening of your spirit, and maybe a feeling of relief that uplifting, transformational change may be possible?

This is the move up that will create your way out. As long as you focus on the powerful outcome, you create an energetic space for it in your life and reality, and that makes it a definite possibility. But if you stop that flow of energy, you just stopped that outcome from manifesting and you’ll be back in your old cycle again. It doesn’t matter what our reality looks like in this moment, the only way out of it is to change the energy that is being used to support it. So the way out really is ‘up’, as in an upward shift in energy that comes from considering the best possible outcome and letting that be the container you’re filling with your energy.  And, to be honest with you, each thought is creating an outcome anyway so why not create the outcome you really want, instead of more outcomes that you do not want?

Here’s a little challenge for this week, think of one or two wonderful, positive, uplifting outcomes for a challenge you have in your life. Stay focused on those every time you think about the challenge and let your energy stay high. How long does it take for you to begin to see results in your situation?

*GEMINI* 2014 ~ Assimilate All That You’ve Learned & Earned ~ a message from Kelly M. Beard

Gemini ushers in a lighter, more playful energy. It is the Child on the Karmic Wheel, care free and detached, alert and curious, gathering information and telling imaginative stories, playing with new characters & different expressions of Truth. It is time to lighten up and breathe in the fresh air of Spring and know that Summer is coming. 

Energetically, we’ve been through a process akin to the caterpillar-to-butterfly transformation and we must pause so our wings can fully open & activate. We have a moment (1-month) to get acclimated to our new, different, lighter form, as well as the new functions that we are capable of, those things we may have previously considered an impossible and far-off dream.  

As you awaken or open to who and where you are now, there is a lot to take in. Wiggle your toes, stretch, breathe deeply, and give gratitude for another chance to fulfill your potential and experience Life. This month is so supported to assimilate all that you’ve learned & earned in the last 3-6-9-12 years. Release the non-essential and outdated. Look at EVERYTHING with open, innocent eyes seeing for the very first time, with wonder & awe! You’ve come a long way, changed form completely and been reborn in to a whole new realm of possibilities. 

You can use the Gemini New Moon (5/28) to initiate new self-expression, ideas & thought patterns. You’re working with new information about your Self, as well as your world. As you recognize that, the Sag Full Moon (6/13) illuminates your personal Truth in a way that releases the old Story of your life completely. You will know, on a deep Soul Level, that it is time to step fully in to your new Story and embody your Authentic Truth a little more than ever before. 

Another concept that continues to be supported by a wide range of planetary alignments is that of the New Earth. Essentially, Earth just rebooted its own 26,000 year cycle in 2012, so we can take that literally or figuratively but either way, we have to adapt to the NEW ways of existing on a constantly evolving, living planet. Since Earth is our Home in the solar system, there is that large, collective perspective of Rebirth (‘out with the old/in with the new’) that we must consider. But then we must bring it down to human size, and individually, define *HOME* for ourselves.

    How/When/Where do you retreat to replenish your resources?

Cosmic Weather: New Moon Report for 5/28/14 a message from Rev. Irma Kaye Sawyer

Hello friends. We soon will be at the New Moon in Gemini, which will set the stage for the upcoming Mercury Retrograde in Gemini, which will be with us for almost the entire month of June. While Mercury retrogrades have been known to have their challenges, this one is going to be unique and in many ways, magical and personally transforming. I will delve more into that with the Cosmic Weather monthly snapshot for June, coming up soon.

When I pondered the energies of this incoming new moon I heard the song “Maps and Legends” by REM (an oldie but a goodie!) in my head. Listening to the lyrics, it seemed very appropriate. Besides a tale or story, the legend of a map is the key to read or decipher it. Mercury, the ruler of Gemini also rules messages and maps of all kinds. So there you go. The Universe is giving us a sweet little clue, right there.

Down the way the road’s divided, paint me the places you have seen. Those who know what I don’t know, refer to the yellow, red, and green. Maybe he’s caught in the legend. Maybe he’s caught in the mood. Maybe these maps and legends, have been misunderstood. He’s not to be reached. (song attributed to Mills/Berry/Buck/Stipe.)

The Sabian Symbol for this new moon is 8 Gemini: Aroused Strikers Surround A Factory.

This certainly is an image with distinct and powerful implications. A “Striker” is someone currently unhappy or dissatisfied with environmental conditions, usually in regards to the terms of employment, union conditions and so forth. They are also willing to take a stand against this conditions to make their voices known to those in positions of authority and also the public. A “Strike” is often not something done in secret or shadow, but in the light of day.

One of the more fun aspects of Gemini energy is its infinite curiosity, and ability to explore and shape-shift. The shadow of this however, is to dissipate one’s energy in misguided or fruitless pursuits. To follow a map that leads to nowhere, so to speak. If you want to break out of your current conditions and perhaps cause a personal “strike” for the better, look to the maps and legends, wherever they may appear. Also be willing to traverse the “road less traveled,” where as the song suggests, you may not be reached for awhile. I feel this new moon is significant to the overall journey and experience that will occur throughout the month of June. It’s definitely a time to be aware of personal messages and possible directives.

Be mindful that the nervous system will be highly sensitized during this new moon cycle and stimulant intake should be monitored; insomnia is a possibility as well. Have a notebook or voice recorder on hand for ideas that may come floating in, and also for arcane directives and symbols that may float in during dreamtime.

All your thoughts and feelings are energy, and energy is vibration. Learn to raise those vibrations and watch your life change dramatically.

1. Find something beautiful and appreciate it.

Beauty is all around us, from the morning dew to the evening stars and everything in between. Most go through life not noticing all the beautiful things that are around them, and yes it’s every where, so take the time to notice them, and appreciate them when you see it. Whether it’s the scent of a flower or the way rain ripples in puddles of water, appreciate the beauty life has to offer.

2. Make a list of all that you are grateful for.

Making a gratitude list shifts your vibrations from focusing on what you do not have to what is already abundant in your life. There is more to be grateful for than you could possibly imagine. You can start with “I’m Alive!” and expand from there. Gratitude is the Attitude.

3. Meditate.

Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and breath in and out. Too often we rush through our days with a scattered brain leaving us in a state of anxiety and stress, Meditation helps to calm your spirit down and put you in a peaceful state of mind. 10 Minuets of meditation a day can change your life forever.

4. Do something for someone else.

Giving to someone else shifts your thinking from “I don’t have enough, to I have more than enough to give to others.” Abundance is a high vibration.

5. Stop complaining and gossiping.

Complaining and Gossip puts you in a very low vibration. Ask yourself “Are the things you are talking about bringing you more of what you want?” if not then, Stop complaining, and start finding ways to rejoice.

6. Move. Exercise. Get active.

Vibration requires movement, the more you move the better your vibrations move. So Get Active! Dance! The happier you feel, the more you will draw happy experiences to yourself because you are operating at a different frequency.

7. Realize that you have more control over your life than you thought.

You are not a victim to circumstance, past, family upbringing, trauma, or anything else. You can change your life in an instant. Just realize this. In many wisdom traditions this is called “total responsibility.” No one is responsible for how you feel right now but you. It isn’t a curse. It’s a blessing because it gives you your power back.

8. Breathe.

Just sit and try to make your breath longer, fuller, and more relaxed. It has a direct affect on your nervous system and helps to calm you down. A calm vibration is a high vibration.

9. Do Something You’re Afraid Of.

Fear holds us back from being in a state of love and happiness, and facing those fears opens you up to a greater world of possibilities. Fear of Heights? Go skydiving. Scared of public speaking, say a poem at an open mic. You’ll begin to realize your fear was worse then the actual problem, and a sense of relief will wash over you.

10. Have a Meaningful Conversation with a Friend.

Rather than gossip or complaining, talk about you ideas. What do you have planned for yourself? what do you think is the nature of reality? Are we spiritual beings having a human experience? Talking about these things with someone helps to raise both your vibrations by thinking big. If you don’t have someone to talk to about these kinds of things with, there’s a community of higher minded individuals right here.

OM TIMES: 7 Ways to Bring Reiki Into Your Life By Andrew Pacholyk MS L.Ac

Reiki is described as a holistic therapy, which brings about healing on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. The belief is that the energy will flow through the practitioner’s hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a potential recipient. Some teachings stress the importance of the practitioner’s intention or presence in this process, while others claim that the energy is drawn by the recipient’s need to activate or enhance the natural healing processes. (I believe both are true). Furthermore, the belief is that the energy is “intelligent”, meaning that the Reiki knows where to heal, even if a practitioner’s hands are not present in the specific area. This is Universal attention.

Learning to work with Reiki gives you the ability to connect with an inexhaustible source of energy, which can be used to induce a healing effect. Anyone can gain access to this energy by means of an attunement process carried out by a Reiki Master. (I personally believe that anyone can gain access to this energy, because it is Universal. No one holds control or a patent to energy).

Consider these suggestions for bringing reiki energy into your life:

Just for today

1. Life unfolds in the present. But so often, we let the present slip away, allowing time to rush past unobserved and unseized, and squandering the precious seconds of our lives as we worry about the future and ruminate about what’s past. “We’re living in a world that contributes in a major way to mental fragmentation, disintegration, distraction, decoherence,” says Buddhist scholar B. Alan Wallace. We’re always doing something, and we allow little time to practice stillness and calm. When we are at work, we fantasize about being on vacation; on vacation, we worry about the work piling up on our desks. We dwell on intrusive memories of the past or fret about what may or may not happen in the future. We don’t appreciate the living present because our “monkey minds,” as Buddhists call them, vault from thought to thought like monkeys swinging from tree to tree.

2. Most of us don’t undertake our thoughts in awareness. Rather, our thoughts control us. “Ordinary thoughts course through our mind like a deafening waterfall,” writes Jon Kabat-Zinn, the biomedical scientist who introduced meditation into mainstream medicine. In order to feel more in control of our minds and our lives, to find the sense of balance that eludes us, we need to step out of this current, to pause, and, as Kabat-Zinn puts it, to “rest in stillness – to stop doing and focus on just being.”

3. We need to live more in the moment. Living in the moment, also called mindfulness, is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. When you become mindful, you realize that you are not your thoughts; you become an observer of your thoughts from moment to moment without judging them. Mindfulness involves being with your thoughts as they are, neither grasping at them nor pushing them away. Instead of letting your life go by without living it, you awaken to experience.

4. Cultivating a nonjudgmental awareness of the present bestows a host of benefits. Mindfulness reduces stress, boosts immune functioning, reduces chronic pain, lowers blood pressure, and helps patients cope with cancer. By alleviating stress, spending a few minutes a day actively focusing on living in the moment reduces the risk of heart disease.

5. Mindful people are happier, more exuberant, more empathetic, and more secure. They have higher self-esteem and are more accepting of their own weaknesses. Anchoring awareness in the here and now reduces the kinds of impulsivity and reactivity that underlie depression, binge eating, and attention problems. Mindful people can hear negative feedback without feeling threatened. They fight less with their romantic partners and are more accommodating and less defensive. As a result, mindful couples have more satisfying relationships.

6. Mindfulness is at the root of Buddhism, Taoism, and many Native American traditions, not to mention yoga. It’s why Thoreau went to Walden Pond; it’s what Emerson and Whitman wrote about in their essays and poems. “Everyone agrees it’s important to live in the moment, but the problem is how,” says Ellen Langer, a psychologist at Harvard and author of Mindfulness. “When people are not in the moment, they’re not there to know that they’re not there.” Overriding the distraction reflex and awakening to the present takes intentionality and practice.

7. Living in the moment involves a profound paradox: You can’t pursue it for its benefits. That’s because the expectation of reward launches a future oriented mindset, which subverts the entire process. Instead, you just have to trust that the rewards will come. There are many paths to mindfulness and at the core of each is a paradox. Ironically, letting go of what you want is the only way to get it.

“Hello Beautiful!

I’m so happy to connect with you today. Thank you for taking the time to listen and receive. Here are some of the themes in play as we continue to unfold our new experiences of conscious presence, in the material.

Being at a loss for words.

We’re in an expansive, void-state lately. But it’s different from before.

I’ve realized, that as my consciousness expands, encompassing more and more of all that I am, that I am increasingly experiencing awareness beyond concepts. Thus, being at a loss for stories, or making meaning out of what’s taking place. Perhaps you’ve noticed this too?

Interestingly, despite this, in any given moment, it’s quite easy to participate when another person or situation presents, which is a wonderful confirmation that we do indeed have access to everything that we need. A reminder that all we need is what we need, now.

Reorganization of the mind-body hierarchy.

First of all, emotions are being seen more accurately by many of us; as triggered pathways of thought. Loops. Neural nets. The distinction between emotions and feelings or sensations is arising to be perceived. Have you sensed or noticed this?

As you live without the filters of beliefs and stories, more and more, you can see the difference between emotions and the more direct experiences of feelings or sensations.

In addition to emotions losing their lustre and their power, the hierarchy of the mind-body has been reorganized.

The mind-body, a sentient, all-knowing field of local and non-local energies is increasingly now functioning as an integration of spirit and material. The mind, as awareness, is increasingly grounded in the body.

Ground by coming fully in, here.

For a long while, we were guided to ground and connect to the Earth. More useful now, is to ground yourself by filling up your physical form with the conscious awareness that is YOU. Inviting your essence into your human form.

Realize that your awareness, IS YOU. So as you bring attention fully into the body, not just down the spinal pathway, not just in your chakras, but filling up your whole physical body and then emanating from you as your auric field, you ground yourself on Earth.

What was missing before for so many Lightworkers, was a willingness to come fully in! There was hesitancy. There was resistance. This is natural given the emotional triggers and the past life experiences that may have also informed and been re-experienced in new ways in this life to provide a pathway to expanded wholeness. Yet, now it is more than obvious, that manifesting and ascending, are part and parcel. That the material IS the vehicle for ascension. It is the context for this collective shift into finer, lighter, awareness.

Moving beyond duality.

In the past, spiritual development involved going inward, with a focus to reach upward. The filter of duality saw the lower chakras and reflections of this in the world (money, for example,) as non-spiritual. There was a hope that one could escape all this, and ascend.

For anyone living this way, there was a lot of activity in the upper chakras and not much in the lower chakras. If you’ve found it hard to manifest, try grounding by coming fully into your body with your conscious awareness, using your attention and intend. It will make a huge difference in your creative powers.

As we expand beyond duality, and transactional relationship to life, we embrace the material as local and non-local energy; inherently love and beautiful, expressed in form and specificity. Innately harmonious and a variation on the endless themes of love.

We begin to realize; it’s about being here, and being the Creator-God’s we innately are.

So then, we encounter, the most challenging of situations: the realization that we must go all in, and start and build and create and imagine and hope anew, to receive the harvest of it all. To fulfill our divine intentions in being here.

Learning to invest again.

Personally, I find learning to invest again, annoying. Beyond annoying, really. Isn’t annoying a way of couching our disappointment? Being somewhat cynical, reticent, jaded? Yes.

Recently I realized this in a very pointed way as I moved into a new home. It’s beautiful! Light-filled, spacious. Room to work, write, channel, paint, grow things and relax. It’s in a wonderful area and close to all the things I love about where I live.

Here I sit 20 days in, in rooms still largely filled with boxes. Why? Well, I’m tired for one. And my air conditioner broke when I first moved in, so I couldn’t live here during our 100 + degree heat wave. But those are just stories.

The reason I haven’t yet unpacked more is that I’ve hit that sticky resistance, that says, “Why bother? OMG, I’ve done this so many times before…and I’m tired!”

It’s the Atlantis-paradigm. The deep memory of being thwarted right in the midst of arriving in a life that you worked for, a long time and perhaps even, through many lifetimes. Or it’s the Lemurian-paradigm. Pick your disappointment, we’ve all got them.

Part of being a Lightworker is volunteering, with enthusiasm, countless times, to enter the material and bring forth our light. Our light is our consciousness. As we embody it more and more fully, we increase the spin of our field, ascending.

Now we’re in a state of being that is truly new. The material itself is uplifted. Then why, you may wonder, as did I, are we still so tired and hesitant to jump right in and create?

Because we’re learning to live beyond that old way of creating.

Beyond transactions: learning to receive.

The impulse to create as in our past, isn’t coming forth. I realized this once I put my compassion hat on and stopped beating myself up for not zipping around in zest-filled zeal that at last I am in my new home.

I realized; it’s about learning to let the support in, let the higher levels of my being, my entourage, the “Golden Dawn Squad,” as I like to call them, my essence, all of my Family of Light in the non-physical, collaborate with me and present to me.

It’s about opening more fully and learning to receive.

For a long time, as we awoke, we were learning to be, rather than doing all the time. Now I see that we’re opening up to even more ease, we’re opening more fully, to receive. This invitation to open more, to receive more, is the Divine Feminine quality that is talked about so much in regards to Earth’s Magical shift taking place.

The key now is to discover our own ways to open more and become a living channel of all that we are. The Epitome of Me. Of You. Of each of us.

Open to the fullness of our being, open to the world. Flowing. Receiving. Expressing. Emanating. Present. Alive and creative.

Holding Back the Floodgates.

Each of us has spent lots of time letting go of everything that wasn’t in alignment with all that we are. Realize that doing this has simply created a more and more abundant flow!

As we have not yet learned to open more fully to receive all that we’ve created and intended, we’re in essence, holding back the floodgates. No wonder we’re so tired.

The key to having more energy is not just to sleep more. It’s to open more and let more in.

In effect, we’ve gotten into big-time alignment with a rushing river of more-everything that we’ve wanted.

So it’s time to learn to open to the door wider and wider and let more and more of it in.

How, then, now do we open to receive?

What I’ve noticed is there are several things that seem to support this opening up more. Each of us is different, and we’ll each have to find what works best and where we tend to be more closed.

Hint: the areas of greatest disappointment are where we’re used to holding back the flow.

We can invite our own Family of Light, our non-physical friends, to expand our perspective. To reignite our confidence and hope. They can also steer us and guide us and show us and assist as we move through our day, helping us to connect with more and more of the life we’ve created and not yet experienced.

Give permission and invite support.

Remember — the Angels, Archangels, Ascended Masters and all of the Star Families and our Cosmic Families still need our permission to step forth more fully and assist in the Earth realm.

Invite them in. Ask them to be with you. Give them permission each morning and each evening to help you remember how to live open and free. To reclaim your hope, and the natural, carefree prowess of expressing and receiving that are your true nature.

That’s the frontier for us now and this month, and through the September Equinox, there’ll be lots of people being presented with invitations to reawakening to a renewed optimism.

How does one get this invitation? By inviting assistance and support from all that we are. By learning to ask for what we want and learning to expect and receive support.

What is your relationship with support?

This simple act of asking for support, is part of learning to receive. It’s an act of openness. It can demonstrate the knowing of our Oneness. If we know we are One and believe we are supported, wouldn’t it be natural, in this time when our bodies are so weary and our hearts so tired, to invite, open and welcome support?

It’s up to us to realize that what we’re not receiving, we don’t yet know how to let in. It’s not that we cannot create. It’s that we’re not used to receiving abundantly, with ease and grace. Learning that this is the truth of life, will take some practice.

Not All Belly Fat Is Fat

Not all belly fat is fat. Sometimes it is bloat, sometimes constipation, sometimes water weight and, yes, sometimes belly fat is just fat. In order to properly assess what might make the belly distended, one has to understand anatomy and the way hormones work. In addition to being overweight or having metabolic syndrome — a triad of conditions including high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and belly fat, which together increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke — a gut diagnosis must take into account whether a woman is menstruating, pre or post menopausal, how the body rids itself of toxins and what medications are in the bloodstream and stored in the tissues.

 

The digestive tract is a good place to begin searching for answers to a bulging belly. If gas and abdominal pain accompany your little paunch, then you simply may not have enough hydrochloric acid (HCl) produced by your stomach or digestive enzymes from the pancreas. Chronic stress trumps digestion and shuts off the switch for making digestive enzymes. If this sounds familiar then remember to take some deep relaxing breaths before you eat. Production also diminishes with age. Luckily there are supplements to replace both the acid and the enzymes.

 

 

Leaky Gut Means Inflammation

 

Times have changed. More and more people are becoming sensitive to gluten or wheat and have multiple food allergies. Eating food that your body cannot process causes inflammation in the gut. If you have ever injured your knee or elbow and the joint became swollen, this is what happens in your intestines. Doing an elimination diet or removing the major culprits, like gluten, will help flatten the belly out. Consider removing dairy from your diet since over 50% of the population is lactose intolerant according to the National Institute of Health.

 

Leaky gut is a condition where the cells lining the last part of the small intestine where absorption of food takes place separate from each other, allowing undigested food particles and microbes to cross a boundary into the deeper tissues of the body where they don’t belong. This puts your immune system on high alert and inflammation ensues along with gas and bloating.

 

The most common cause of leaky gut is ingesting ibuprofen and other non-steroidal, 

anti-inflammatory medications for several weeks in a row. There is some evidence that eating wheat and genetically modified foods also contribute to a leaky gut. This breach in the walls allows inflammation to travel to other parts of the body and can contribute to a wide range of conditions such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease and autoimmune conditions. Leaky gut is not a diagnosis taught in medical school, so it’s somewhat of a mystery in the medical community, but often chiropractors trained in applied kinesiology can help patients figure it out. As serious at this condition is, healing leaky gut takes only about 6 weeks with the proper supplements and diet.

 

The digestive tract is home to 100 trillion bacteria made up of 500 to 1000 species of “good” bacteria, which, when well stocked provide the perfect ecosystem for supporting the immune system in the gut. Numerous scientific studies attest to the essential importance of these micro-organisms that live in symbiosis with us. In fact, the ratio of gut flora to human cells is about 10 to 1. These cells also supply vitamins, support the cells lining the small intestine to act as a barrier, and even direct the “bad” bacteria to do its bidding for the body when the good bacteria is in control.

 

A few courses of pharmaceutical antibiotics, however, can tip the scales in favor of the unwanted pathogens being the captains of your bowel. For example, when yeast are not kept in check, eating any sugar, white flour or alcohol can send them out of control, as if drunk, as they expand, expand, expand like bread rising. You may find yourself sitting with your pants unbuttoned. Both prebiotics and probiotics are part of the strategy for returning your gut to normal bacterial balance.

 

 

Constipation: Enemy Number Two

 

While conventional medicine defines constipation as having two to three bowel movements per week, many people who eat a diet high in vegetables, fruit and fiber relieve themselves two to three times a day! Depending on the size of the colon, it can hold up to 25 pounds of feces. Those who don’t evacuate regularly might truthfully be said to be “full of it!”

 

Constipation can be the result of poor diet, eating foods one is allergic to or not getting enough fiber. If you have added fiber and removed potential allergens and the colon is still sluggish, you might have an undiagnosed hypothyroid condition. Find a doctor that investigates using a whole thyroid panel instead of just TSH to determine if your thyroid is sluggish. Make sure your labs include a reverse T3 test and anti-thyroid antibodies.

 

If you have had your gall bladder removed, bile salts, which are the body’s laxative, are limited and need to be supplemented. Make sure you drink enough water. Divide your weight in two and drink that amount of ounces of water daily.

 

The digestive tract is also deeply tied in to our emotions so if you are the kind of person who is a “holder on-er” or someone who is dogmatic or can’t let go, consider exploring why it is hard to let go. Add breathing techniques or stress-reducing tools to your daily routine.

 

 

Detoxifying the Liver

 

Although the body has several ways of detoxifying itself, the main organ of detoxification is the liver. Because we live in a world with constant exposure to external toxins from the air, water and possibly the food we eat, not to mention cosmetics, alcohol and drugs, the liver can get to a point where it is overwhelmed by toxicity. Like a drain that gets clogged so everything backs up, if the liver cannot metabolize the toxins, they have to get out of the blood stream somehow, so the body’s intelligence stores them in the back of the closet located in the fat layer above your belly button. (Think big-bellied guy in a speedo.) Cleansing programs along with using infrared saunas can slowly help toxins flush out of the system.

 

The liver is also the organ that breaks down steroid hormones, such as cortisol (the stress hormone), and estrogen. When the liver is sluggish, hormones will accumulate in certain tissues in the body. While excess estrogens can add weight to the hips, buttock and thighs, it can also contribute to belly fat, as can excess cortisol. Sticking to a good 21-day liver cleanse program, you will feel lighter in body and soul.

 

According to author Roni Caryn Rabin in the New York Times, one in ten Americans now takes an antidepressant medication; among women in their 40s and 50s, the figure is one in four. Most antidepressants are associated with gain weight, especially in the belly region. If you have to take them, make sure you eat real food and eliminate sugar. If you gain a lot of weight, speak to your doctor about identifying other options that would still give you the support you need.

 

Chronically high circulating cortisol, a hormone released by the adrenal gland under stress, is the major culprit of fat deposits in belly region. This visceral fat tissue responds to cortisol by further increasing its size. This can cause insulin resistance. Sitting for thirty minutes in an infrared sauna a few days a week will help to lower cortisol levels and give you a deep sense of relaxation. Taking a restorative yoga class and doing some yogic breathing will also be a wonderful outlet for reducing stress. Make an adrenal supportive smoothie using maca, a Peruvian superfood that helps the body to adapt to stress and boosts the libido too!

 

 

Balancing Estrogen Dominance

 

Hormones need to have checks and balances so they don’t overstimulate the body. In the body, estrogens instruct the DNA of estrogen-sensitive tissues to make more and bigger cells (this is what gives women our contours) and progesterone says, “Okay, that’s enough, stop!” Estrogen dominance is a state where there is not enough progesterone to oppose the action of estrogens. Estrogen is likened to a gas pedal in a car while progesterone acts like the brakes. If the brakes are not working, the estrogen keeps pushing the DNA to do its bidding — think cysts, tender breasts, PMS, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

 

Estrogen dominance can be found both when a woman is menstruating and menopausal. Accompanying this state may be a potbelly. The best way to reduce the risk of creating a state of estrogen dominance is to eat organic and hormone-free food. Most people don’t realize that pesticides are xenoestrogens, meaning they act like estrogens in the body. Fill your plate with plenty of cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower, which aid the liver in completely metabolizing estrogens, and eat a high fiber diet so these metabolites leave the body. Luckily there are many herbal strategies for hot flashes and night sweats so that you don’t have to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and add more estrogen to the body.

 

Belly fat, bloat, constipation, toxicity, estrogen dominance — does one relate to you? Follow your hunch. Educate yourself. If need be find a practitioner who can help you come up with a plan you can break up into small doable goals — not just with food, but to take time for yourself and calm your mind. Get rid of foods that don’t serve you. Ask friends for healthy recipes or buy a cleansing cookbook. Be patient. Give your protocols time to work. You will be glad you did.
